These brooches are mainly made with the Brick stitch technique. The weaving obtained in Brick Stitch or Peyote is very similar even if the two techniques are totally different. So, how to recognize a weaving made in Brick Stitch or in Peyote? Peyote is used for simple shapes that are close to a rectangle or hexagon. Brick stitch is used for complex and jagged shapes.
Bead weaving experts sometimes use both techniques in the same project. The peyote allows to weave a surface quickly and the brick stitch to add details. However, for beginners, making a shape other than a rectangle or hexagon will be much easier with brick stitch. Knowing when to switch from one technique to another can be complicated when you are a beginner.
Brick stitch is combined with another technique to make the first row of beads and multiple bead increases. It is called ladder stitch. Ladder stitch is used to create a line of beads. You will learn it by making your first brick stitch.
